Ionic Formulas AND Naming
LEARNING TARGET: STUDENTS CAN WRITE CORRECT FORMULAS AND NAME IONIC COMPOUNDS WITH MONATOMIC IONS AND POLYATOMIC IONS.
In the introduction we have already learned how to write ionic formulas. However, in this section we are going to make formulas using the polyatomic ions and monatomics with oxidation numbers. The cris-cros method still works for these as long as you can identify the charge.
Criss cross method with group A ions
Criss cross method with Polyatomic Ions
Criss cross method with ions that have Oxidation
-ide Ending
As you already know , polyatomic ions end in -ate and -ite. If the element is from the Periodic Table the ending is always -ide for the anion of the bond. (-ide ending are only for the negative ion)
- chlorine - chloride
- oxygen - oxide
- sulfur - sulfide
- iodine - iodide
