Learning Targets:
Students will formulate a testable hypothesis supported by prior knowledge to guide an investigation.
Students will analyze and interpret data, synthesize ideas, formulate and evaluate models, and clarify concepts and explanations.
Students will use results to verify or refute a hypothesis, and propose and/or evaluate possible revisions and alternate explanations.
LAB BOOK REQUIMENTS
Lab Safety Quiz AND equipment quiz MUST BE PASSED AND FORMS ABOVE MUST BE SIGNED and FILED with your instructor before you preform the first lab. All students without these documents on file will not participate in lab and will do an alternative writing assignment.
Pre-Lab Requirements (15pts)
BEFORE EACH LAB you will be required to do a pre-lab write up by yourself.
The write up will include the following:
The write up will include the following:
- Read the entire lab and write down any questions you may have.
- Write a purpose explaining why the instructor would have you do the lab and how it relates to the topics being covered in lecture.
- List the materials and use the MSDS search link above to check for hazardous materials.
- Write out the procedures IN YOUR OWN WORDS, so that I know that you understand what you are doing.
- Identify the main point of the lab and write a hypothesis, which is a prediction of the out come of the lab. This is what you will be writing your conclusion about.
Lab Day and Conclusion (20pts)
You MUST have the pre-lab complete to start the lab. On lab day I will check off your pre-lab by reading all your information and giving you a grade out of 15 points. The day of lab EVERYONE IN YOUR GROUP NEEDS TO RECORD OBSERVATIONS. I will give you hints in your procedure asking questions that you can answer to help you learn to take good observations. You will also be using the information in your observations to write your conclusion.
When you have completed your lab with your group, you will now INDIVIDUALLY complete your post lab requirements. Post lab requirements will vary. Depending on the lab you might have to do calculations, graphing, make a data table, or just state results. This will be clearly explained before the lab begins. Below is the layout that will need to be followed. Your calculations will be graded in order to know your own work was done on the data table.
In your conclusion you need to do the following:
1) Re-State your hypothesis
2) State whether your hypothesis was correct or incorrect and WHY.
3) State what you might do differently next time you do the experiment/lab
4) State what you learned and how it relates to the topics being discussed in class.
Post lab requirements are worth another 20 points, for each lab totally 35 points.
