South Sioux City High School Chemistry
This Chemistry website was developed to serve as a "living" syllabus. Tabs are the Units we will be covering and Sub-tabs are the Sections. The text book will still be used along with other great chemistry resources throughout this course. All of the information has been combined on the website in a form that will be easy for you to navigate. The expectations for understanding and passing chemistry are clearly defined and laid out. On the unit pages you will find the Learning Goals for each unit, a summary of the chapter, and graphics that will help you understand the sections (sub pages information). Sub pages have Learning Targets for each day that are aligned with Priority Standards. There are videos made by me or another chemistry teacher, important vocabulary, and other graphics and links to help you understand the concepts.
This Chemistry class will be taught using the Flipped Classroom Model. You are going to have the opportunity to work on all of your paper pencil problems in class. My past experience has shown that chemistry homework can be extremely difficult to do independently. The in-class setting for independent practice will allow you to watch a teacher-made video covering the topic. You will have the entire class period to do your practice and gain a deep understanding of the concept before moving onto the next concept.
In a Flipped Classroom, watching the short, teacher-made videos is critical to success. Therefore, there will be an OPEN NOTE video quiz at the beginning of every class. This is an accountability piece to make sure you are watching the videos at home. Staying on pace in this class can be somewhat more difficult than a traditional class setting because you have to watch your 15-20 minute video for your homework. However, typical chemistry homework can take hours to complete. This format can actually save you time because the work will be done, with my assistance, in class. During class, I will be available for questions the entire period. You will also be allowed to work with your classmates. Work will be checked and redone until you receive 100%. I have had very good success with the Flipped Classroom in terms of students passing and understanding chemistry. There is a video below that I hope can answer any other questions you may have about the Flipped Classroom model.
Note: This website is still a work in progress for me; each year it gets better based on feedback from students and parents and student progress.
