Resonance Structures and Exceptions to the Octet Rule
Learning Target: Students can identify covalently bonded structures that have resonance and be familiar with exceptions to the octet rule.
In covalent bonding all structures have been pretty straight forward with one answer. Unfortunately there are some exceptions to the calculation we have been doing and to the structures we have been drawing. Polyatomic ions are the main source of these exceptions. During the Chemistry of the Atmosphere Unit we talked about resonance structures that we will now be talking about more indepth and learning how to draw them.
